To distinguish between faux mink and horsehair, the following aspects can be examined:
Appearance characteristics
Gloss: Horsehair has a naturally lustrous appearance, resembling the sheen of silk. The gloss is soft and natural. In contrast, the gloss of faux mink might be either too bright or too dull. Some faux mink fibers may have a strong reflective quality, which can be quite harsh and lacks the soft, gentle feel of horsehair.
Hair Texture: The hair of horsehair is long and robust, with fibers that are relatively straight and have little curvature. In contrast, the hair of faux mink may be shorter and finer, with hair that is more prone to curling. Additionally, after a period of use, the three-dimensional appearance of the faux mink hair can deteriorate due to the hair's tendency to droop.
Feel and texture
Softness: Horsehair has a soft yet sturdy texture, and when touched, one can feel the elasticity and smoothness of its fibers. Faux mink may have a harder or more abrasive feel, especially lower-quality faux mink, which might have a rough texture and lack the delicacy of real mink.
Volatility: When horsehair is tightly held and then released, it has a voluminous feel that quickly returns to its original state. In contrast, the volatility of faux mink may be relatively poor. After being tightly held and then released, it may take longer to return to its original state or may appear more rigid and lack the natural voluminous feel.
Smell of burning: When a small amount of fiber is burned, mohair, as an animal fiber, has a smell similar to that of burning feathers. After burning, it does not form a solid ball, and the ash is in the form of fine powder that disperses easily when blown away. Faux mink, on the other hand, is usually made from synthetic fibers. When burned, it emits a smoky smell, and the residue that remains after burning forms a hard ball that feels sticky when touched.
Price factor: Horsehair is a high-end textile raw material with limited production, resulting in a relatively high price. If the product price is too low and significantly different from the normal price of horsehair on the market, it is highly likely that the product is not genuine horsehair but rather a fake mink fur or another cheap substitute.
