Remedies for Shrunk Wool Sweaters

Wool shrinks when exposed to high heat, rubbing, or alkaline detergents (fiber scales entangle). Try these steps to restore:

I. Emergency Soaking

1. Mix 30°C water with neutral wool detergent (or conditioner with softening agents).

2. Soak the sweater for 10-15 minutes (avoid hot water to prevent further shrinkage).

II. Gentle Stretching

1. Blot excess water with a towel (do not wring).

2. Stretch gradually to original size:

① Pull bust/sleeve width horizontally; lengthen length/sleeves vertically (1-2cm per stretch).

② Weight edges (e.g., books) to set shape; air-dry in shade.

III. Repeat for Mild Shrinkage

If needed, re-soak and stretch 2-3 times (fibers retain limited elasticity).

IV. Professional Help

For severe shrinkage (>10% size loss), use a dry cleaner—steam and mechanical stretching improve success.

V. Prevent Re-shrinkage

After restoration, follow wool care: cold water, neutral detergent, flat drying.

Note: Act promptly—over-shrinking may break fibers. Avoid hot water or harsh rubbing.

Unrepairable Warning

Stop if:

· Fibers feel hard/felted

· Seams are twisted (structural damage)

· Previously repaired multiple times

▸ Alternative: Repurpose as gloves/scarves
